Football Betting Guide - Page 2
This football betting guide will attempt to teach you, in simple terms, everything that is needed to bet on football online, from opening an account with a bookmaker to all the various kinds of betting opportunities on offer.
If, after reading this guide, you still have any questions about how to bet on football then feel free to contact us and we will be more than happy to help you!
5. Half Time / Full Time (HT/FT)
This type of bet is to choose what the outcome will be at both half time and full time.
For instance, if the match was Liverpool vs Chelsea and you thought that it would be a draw at half-time and a Liverpool win at full time, you would bet on Draw - Liverpool. In order to win this bet, you need to get both outcomes correct.
6. Goalscorer - First, Last, Anytime
These propositions allow you to bet on different choices of whether you think a certain player will score either first, last or at any time during the match.
These are three different types of bets and you do not need to bet on all at once. As choosing who will score either first or last in a match is much more difficult than choosing an "anytime" scorer, the odds offered are generally much higher, although Anytime Scorer Odds are often quite good as well.
In this example from Bet365, see how you can bet on any of the three goalscorer options separately.
7. Draw No Bet (aka DNB)
A Draw = No Bet is betting on a full time result pick with the difference being that there is no option for the draw. You can bet on either of the two teams winning, and if the match ends in a draw, your full stake is refunded.
8. Double Result
A Double Result lets you bet on two different outcomes and you win your stake if one of these outcomes occurs.
For example: If Home Team & Draw is selected, and the result at the end of 90 minutes is either a home team win or a draw then that selection is a winner.
3. Understanding Different Odds
Odds are a reflection of the probability of a certain outcome happening in an event. In any event, every outcome has a certain chance of taking place. Odds are simply an interpretation of those chances and the odds presented by bookmakers reflect such chances to the best of their abilities.
Most online bookmakers offer up to three different choices on how you want to view your odds: Decimal, Fractional or American.
1. Decimal Odds
Decimal odds are commonly used in Europe and also known as European odds.
To convert chances into decimal odds just put the chance as a % and divide into 100.
100/%Chance = decimal odds
So if you think something has a 25% chance of winning then
100/25 = 4
For example, you want to place a bet that has decimal odds of 4.0. If you win, for every pound you stake you will receive 4 pounds back. Stake £100 and you will receive back £400. This amount received back includes your original stake in the odds.
2. Fractional Odds
The more traditional fractional odds are often used in the UK. Using the 25% chance example again, the fractional odds equivalent of 4.0 are 3/1.
For example, you want to place a bet that has odds of 3/1. If you win, for every pound you stake you will win £3 AND you will receive your one pound stake back, giving you a total return of £4. If you place a bet of £100 at 3/1, then you will win £300 AND have your £100 stake returned, giving a total return of £400.
3. American Odds
American odds are also known as lines or money line odds. If US Odds are indicated with a + sign then they show the amount you would win for a 100 stake. If there is a - sign then they show how much you need to stake to win 100.
So if you are betting on an event which has decimal odds of 4, or fractional odds of 3/1, the US Odds would be +300 (i.e. you would win 300 if you bet 100). If you are betting at decimal odds of 1.5, or fractional odds of ½, then the US odds would be -200 (you need to bet 200 in order to win 100 more).
